Reel Voices Lead Instructor

The San Diego Asian Film Foundation (SDAFF) is a nonprofit media arts organization dedicated to connecting audiences to the human experience and transforming lives through the Pan Asian Media Arts. Its largest event is the annual San Diego Asian Film Festival, the SDAFF also presents more than 20 year-round events and programs including the production of youth documentaries through REEL VOICES.

About REEL VOICES
Since 2005, the SDAFF has trained local high school students to become socially conscious media-makers through Reel Voices. Each Spring, 8-10 students are chosen to go through an intense digital storytelling “bootcamp” over the summer, experiencing every stage of documentary film production. Students are matchup with filmmaker mentors to guide them through the process (by phone, Skype, and email) of making a quality, meaningful documentaries. By the end of the program each student is expected to create a short doc which will premiere at the annual Film Festival in October. New in 2012, we will also commission the Reel Voices students to collaborate on making a narrative short video.

Job Description
We are seeking a Lead Instructor who is passionate about working with youth and providing them a life-changing experience through Reel Voices. Candidate must have a commanding knowledge of video production with exceptional organizational and communication skills. Ideal candidate would be interested in staying with the program for multiple years and contribute to the program’s overall impact. Because this is a very intense and personal process for the students, media arts instructors are expected to create a nurturing environment.

Schedule for Summer Reel Voices session is tentatively scheduled Mondays and Wednesdays in June and July from 10am - 1PM, but is subject to change depending on availability of Reel Voices team. Scheduled and non-scheduled classes will continue in August to complete editing and production process.

As the lead media arts instructor for REEL VOICES, you will work directly with the REEL VOICES COORDINATOR and supervise the REEL VOICES ASSISANT INSTRUCTOR with primary responsibilities to include:

  • Work with Coordinator to develop new narrative portion of program
  • Serve on committee to review applications
  • Plan and execute curriculum for 8 week program that covers storytelling, character development, conflict, videography, interview skills, editing, sound design, typography, color correction and marketing
  • Contact and coordinate documentary director to arrange Skype Q&A sessions
  • Meet one-on-one with students to develop their story ideas
  • Supervise principal videography and editing of each student film
  • Create exhibition reel of films for festival program
  • Assist with promotional materials for Reel Voices for Festival & Youth day
  • Support production and post-production of narrative short
  • Facilitate production and duplication of DVDs and film compression for web-based distribution
Qualifications
Candidates must be proficient in Final Cut Pro and have experience in media production and/or film studies. Must have strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills with experience in teaching youth. Reliable transportation and flexible working hours over the summer are also required.

Job Type & Benefits
This is a contracted position that begins with 5-10 hours of planning in late April, increasing to 14-16 hours/week between June– August, with additional 10-20 hours total to plan Festival exhibition between September-October. Pay is commensurate with experience.
